New Hope Fellowship was born out of the English-speaking small group within the Korean Church of Westchester in the 1990's. English ministry has always been a vital part of the Korean Church of Westchester. Until recently, its principal focus had been providing ministry to second generation Sunday School children, whose primary language was English.

To serve this important group within KCW, there had been several excellent youth pastors who, with the assistance of many able English-speaking teachers, had led the Sunday School and the Youth Group. However, as the Korean Church of Westchester grew in number, not only the population of English-speaking children grew, the number of English-speaking 1.5 and 2nd generation Korean adults also started growing. Many of these English-speaking adults served in the Sunday school.

Hence, in 1989, a small group of these young adults decided to start an English-speaking Bible study group. The primary goal of this group was to study the Bible together and to encourage one another through fellowship. The Joshua Group, as it was named, met regularly (every third Saturday) at a member's home for dinner and Bible study; it eventually grew in number to about 20 adults.

The members were very active in serving in KCW, especially in the Sunday school programs. However, it became clear that the once a month Bible study was not sufficient to minister to this group's spiritual needs. The need for a more dedicated English ministry was becoming evident, as many of the KCW youth were growing up, finishing college, with many returning to the NY area.

In 1994, the leadership of KCW decided that it needed a Sunday worship service to serve this group of English-speaking Koreans. Thus began the first service of the English Ministry of the Korean Church of Westchester on December 4, 1994, with about forty people attending the service. Since then the English Ministry has gone through several transitions.

To further develop a vibrant outreach ministry to all people who need Christ, the English Ministry evolved into an independent ministry in June 1996 as New Hope Fellowship, with Pastor Lee King as its founding pastor. It was in partnership with the Korean Church of Westchester, sharing various activities and functions.  New Hope Fellowship is established as it's own 501c(3) non-profit organization.

Another major transition was the calling of Edward Kim as our new Senior pastor to New Hope Fellowship, starting January, 2004. May the Lord use this ministry to bring many to Christ and to desire God greatly.
