Even Start Family Literacy Program Print E-mail

The Even Start Family Literacy Program of the Tarrytowns provides intensive services to low-literacy, low-income families in the Tarrytown/Sleepy Hollow area with children from birth to age 7.  Most of the families participating in the Program recently immigrated from Spanish-speaking countries in Latin and South America.  Some of the families involved in the Program are also severely poor and struggle regularly to put adequate food on the table.

The Program consists of a morning and evening adult basic education and literacy program, a day-time early-childhood education program which helps prepare children to enter kindergarten ready to learn, interactive parent-child literacy-based activities, parenting programs and family events.  This Program is extremely structured so as to most effectively provide adults and children with the literacy, language, cultural and social skills they need in order to live healthy and productive lives.

With respect to the Even Start Family Literacy Program of the Tarrytowns, the M/O Ministry Team hopes to:

  • ignite and foster a fire within the NHF body to reach out to the Even Start families, and serve and love them with Christ-like hearts;
  • seek opportunities for NHF to welcome the Even Start families into our community;
  • minister God's blessings and Christ's salvation to the Even Start families by providing nourishment for their bodies and souls; and
  • build relationships with the Even Start families which are rooted in true friendship, trust and fellowship in Christ's name.
